Surprising to many, San Francisco has some amazing beaches - the three main areas are Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, and Crissy Field (the smallest by far).
The weather can be an issue - it's always good to bring an extra layer or two. Otherwise, swim if you dare and check on currents and riptides.
There are some great beaches north in Marin and south along the Peninsula.
